How to help your baby play with their toys longer? Our practical tips
You've probably noticed that babies seem to get bored with their toys in just a few minutes. Yet, play is essential for their cognitive, motor, and emotional development. So, how can we extend these moments of concentration and fun? In this article, we'll look at concrete tips, validated by educational approaches like Montessori, to help babies fully enjoy their toys.
Create a suitable environment to encourage play
The play environment directly influences a baby's attention span.
- Create a quiet space, without too many visual or auditory distractions.
- Place the toys on low shelves or a rug on the floor, so that baby can choose for themselves.
- Space the toys out so that the baby can see them clearly.
An orderly environment encourages the baby to stay focused for longer.
Limit the number of toys available
Too many choices can discourage a baby. According to Montessori principles, it is best to offer a maximum of 3 to 5 toys at a time, adapting this to the baby's age.
- Rotate the toys every 10 to 15 days (toy rotation), depending on the baby's interest in their toys.
- Put unused toys “back to rest”, to better rediscover them later.

Choose toys that are developmental and stimulating.
Simple but well-designed toys allow for different ways of playing depending on age.
For example: wooden cubes, stacking cups, multi-purpose boxes …
- Choose age-appropriate toys that are challenging enough but not too complicated so as not to lose the baby's attention.
- Avoid toys that are too bright or noisy, which only occupy the baby without stimulating their brain.
The Noor & Koala play kits , for example, offer activities adapted to each stage of development (sensory, fine motor skills, bilingualism…).
Accompany baby in the game (without directing)
Babies stay focused longer when they feel encouraged, but their play can be interrupted if they are overstimulated:
- Sit near him, observe him, and name what he's doing. Our parenting guides will help you best support your baby during playtime.
- Encourage him with short phrases: "You stacked two blocks, you did it!" Avoid simply repeating "well done" as this reinforces the baby's need for validation.
- Let him experiment on his own too, without correcting him at every step.
- When baby is focused on their play, avoid disturbing them so as not to interrupt their moment of concentration.
Incorporate gaming into your daily routine
For a baby to get used to playing for longer periods, play needs to be part of the routine:
- After the nap, offer some quiet time with a single game.
- Before bath time, a little ritual with a sensory toy can prolong their interest.
Regularity helps babies develop their ability to concentrate.
To keep your baby playing longer, there's no need to multiply the toys. Simply provide a suitable environment, vary the discoveries through rotation, and above all, prioritize simple toys that offer rich learning opportunities.
At Noor & Koala, we have designed bilingual, Montessori-inspired play kits that accompany baby through every stage of their development while keeping them captivated for longer.
